Wasting your energy proving yourself? Your way out
How much of your life have you spent *unnecessarily* explaining yourself?
Think about it.
Proving yourself so someone “gets you” or “believes you”.
Authenticating your experience so it’s deemed "legitimate".
Phrasing things to be seen as “good enough”
In my work as a psychotherapist, I’ve discovered that when we explain ourselves, we directly feed into Internalized Oppression (IO). It’s like lighting gas to a fire.
Why? Because it means you feel the need to justify yourself. It reinforces that who you are isn’t valid without an explanation.
So you overwork and overcompensate to make it “right”
And you may not even catch yourself doing it. That’s the thing about IO…it’s sneaky. We fall victim to it without even realizing it. But that doesn’t mean its effects are minimal.
Internalized Oppression drains us and limits us from living as our true selves.
When you constantly explain your actions, you start to lose touch with who you are. Am I doing this because I want to or because I think it’s what would make me feel accepted by others?
So how do we avoid it?
The first step is awareness. This might seem simple but it’s really profound.
You have to be brave enough to stay present to the ways you hurt yourself and put yourself down. It's painful awareness.
I want to help you shift, so I’m offering something special to support you build this awareness.
Here is how you can put an end to this overexplanation.
Stop feeding Internalized Oppression so that it may become a beast that taunts you. Cut off its life source so that you can save your energy.
We can’t be expected to do it all alone.
