The sneakiest lie that harms your mental health.

Most people are clueless that this lie exists.

Yet as n’betweeners we digest these sneaky lies every damn day.

This lie destroys our mental health.

I am talking about: Internalized Oppression (IO for short)

Or as I like to call it: the lies we feed ourselves.

IO is the negative beliefs we have about ourselves and other people through repetitive social messages.

When we are subjected to constant oppression, we naturally begin to assume these messages of unworthiness as part of ourselves.

We internalize these oppressive experiences unconsciously as the truth. That we're not good enough, capable, beautiful, intelligent.

Internalized oppression is a deep complex form of self-deception, that largely operates on an unconscious level.

When a world constantly tells us that who we are is not enough, we naturally start believing that we’re less than.

These beliefs are cemented in us from a very young age.

At its core, internalized oppression is feeling unworthy.

Here are a few examples of how IO shows:

  • Women believing that their role is to please men no matter what.

  • An undocumented person believing that “It’s ok that I don’t make many decisions, they know better than me”.

  • African women using skin-whitening products.

  • A trans person strongly distancing themself from other trans people.

  • A child of immigrants perfecting English to the maximum.

HOW does IO show up for you?

Remember that IO is never your fault, but it is your responsibility to learn to work and deal with it.

Next week I have some SUPER DUPER exciting news to share with you!

Stay tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuned.....!

XO
